A common misconception I have noticed, in the US, is that people believe Clara Barton was the founder of the Red Cross. Actually the founder is Henri Dunant, a Swiss. Clara Barton founded the American division of the Red Cross 18 years after Mr. Dunant started it in Europe.
Many people may also see the Red Cross as an organization that primarily focuses on blood drives and disaster relief. While this is true, the Red Cross does provide disaster relief–providing immediate assistance to people affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires, etc. The Red Cross was founded to protect human life, in particular during war. The Red Cross is a strong advocate for Humans Rights and International Humanitarian Law. Its volunteers learn and educate about the rules of conflict that are meant to protect civilians, wounded soldiers, and prisoners of war.
What is your understanding about the Red Cross and IHL?
